Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition in which the median nerve is impinging, most often at a point in the wrist where it passes through a narrow tunnel-like opening known as the carpal tunnel. This opening is formed by the transverse carpal ligament as well as the hammate and pisiform bones in the wrist.

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include:

• Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle finger and possibly part of the ring finger

• Pain in the wrist or hand

• Poor grip strength (trouble lifting and carrying items) or weakness in the wrist and hand

• Difficulty moving the fingers and wrist

1. Tinel's Sign : Hold your symptomatic hand out with the palm facing upward. Tap firmly and quickly on the center of the wrist crease for several seconds. If this swelling aggravates your symptoms, it's likely to be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

2. Phalen's Test : Press the backs of your hands together (with the elbows bent and forearms up). Fingers should be pointing down and the wrists bent at a 90 degree angle. Hold this position for one minute. Any aggravation in symptoms suggests Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

3. Reverse Phalen's Test : Press the palms of your hands together in a prayer position and lower your wrists and forearms as far as possible without letting your hands separate. Hold this position for one minute. Again, any worsening of symptoms suggests Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

There are many reasons why someone may develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Because the carpal tunnel is a narrow space, the median nerve running through it may become entrapped if there is any infection, fluid, or scar tissue buildup within the tunnel. This may occur due to:

• Overuse (repetitive use may irritate the median nerve where it runs through the carpal tunnel)

• Fluid retention (such as in pregnancy)

• Obesity

• Inflammation (this includes arthritis and infections)

• Misalignment of the wrist bones, elbow, or neck and shoulder regions

• Cyst or Tumor in the wrist

Choosing the Right Treatment for You

It is imperative to educate yourself on the treatment options available to you, so that you may make an informed decision as to whether to choose allopathic medicine (most MDs, or Medical Doctors) or alternative medicine (Chiropractic and / or Acupuncture). Allopathic Medicine for Carpal Tunnel:

Taking NSAIDs may decrease pain and inflammation, but this is a band aid rather than a solution. Moreover, long-term use of NSAIDs carries a risk of side effects and serious complications like ulcers (bleeding in the stomach or gut). Corticosteroids are also effective in minimizing inflammation, but they too fail to address what triggered the inflammation, and repeated injections may have negative consequences on the ligaments, immune system, and adrenal glands.

Taking the above measures often fails to provide relief. In fact, over 50% of people who try the above methods end up getting surgery. The surgical “solution” to this problem is to sever (cut) the transverse carpal ligament to make more room for the median nerve. Destroying this ligament destabilizes the structures within the tunnel. Although this provides relief for some, this means a period of limited use and physical therapy during the recovery. Moreover, there is always the risk that scar tissue resulting from the surgery will re-impinge the median nerve.

There are no therapies available in this model to address misalignments in the wrist bones, elbow, shoulder or neck. Most medical doctors are not trained in identifying or treating joint misalignments.

Alternative Medicine for Carpal Tunnel:

The first is a narrowing of the tunnel itself from bones that are misaligned and protrude into the tunnel. This is the most common cause of carpal tunnel sundrome. Treatments for Carpal Tunnel

There are a variety of treatments available for carpal tunnel. The traditional standard of care for the medical approach is prescribing medication, physical therapy and bracing until it progresses and becomes severe enough to perform surgery. Unfortunately none of these methods actually fix the problem. Medication may treat pain short term however will not re-arrange the bones into their proper position. Neither will bracing the wrist with splints. Surgery is performed by cutting the ligament across the opening of the “C” so that the tunnel is enlarged allowing the pressure to be relieved from the nerve. This leaves the wrist unstable and often the bones shift even more over time. All of these methods typically only offer a temporary or short term solution and only focus on pain reduction.

To correct the problem with long term success the mechanical dysfunction of the wrist must be identified and corrected. This is often caused by mis aligned bones. Once identified the bones need to be realigned by someone with extensive training such as a Hand and Foot Chiropractor.

After the correction and the bones are in the proper place the wrist will function as it is intended to do. Typically the patient will experience much relief after the first treatment. Other therapies such as cold laser will also be used to aid in healing of the tissue. Lastly physical therapy will need to be done however not until the mechanical dysfunction has been corrected.

All About Wrist Pain

Today we are in a confined position and we're going to talk about carpal tunnel as well as wrist pain. The biggest thing I have to say about carpal tunnel and wrist pain is that when you are looking at it from a symptomatic view, it's all about where the pain is located and where the extensors or flexors are located. Yet with carpal tunnel, most of the time it goes up towards the top of the body and that is the problem. In this area, we are referring to shoulder issues, neck issues, and the T-spine as well. That is what got me started on this whole journey for recovery. As a massage therapist, every other week I was out and it was horrible so I perfected this technique for myself. That is the key here. This hits home for me in many ways because I could not do the things that I loved, such as helping people.

What I'm going to show you is some easy breaks you can do to get the pain to subside dramatically. However, remember that this is a symptomatic view, not a systematic view. During the symptomatic view, you'll get guaranteed short-term gain. Some of the trigger points can refer to different places but we are only going to be looking at it in specific areas. I'm going to give you a visual of the muscle tissue. So when you're looking at anything that I refer to regarding trigger location work, it is about the general area. It will never refer to that one point, because you're never going to find that one point in the plethora of fibers that you have. You want to think about it in terms of muscle groups that are causing pain in that general area.

So if you have a trigger finger, we will be looking at the muscle group that runs along the forearm. Whatever happens at the top is also happening in the flexors, at the bottom, as well. So the top of your forearm can mirror the part underneath your forearm. You will be trigger-pointing both sides of your forearm, for wrist pain. I'm only going to show you a couple of muscles on one side and you're just going to mirror it to the other side.

Within your extensors, you want to realize that the pain in the elbow reflects down to the hand and it's not always right around where the real problem is. It's important to remember your pain is always someplace else. There's always something driving it someplace else.

One area in your extensors is very close to the elbow and you then have to work your way down. Another area is the thinner muscle you feel when you rotate your forearm slightly. This muscle on the outside refers pain exactly in the center. This muscle is always going to be inflamed and irritated. The next area to look at is the outside of the forearm itself. So, from the top view, you're looking at the forearm at three different areas: you're going to be focusing on the middle, the inside, and outside. Once you do that, then your body is going to really start moving.

Please be mindful of what's happening because because you change things at the top, the bottom will also change. In carpal tunnel syndrome, there is a small, inflated hole that holds all the tendons around your wrist. This inflammation now starts to crush the tendon, which causes the entire wrist to get tighter.

So, if you start loosing all these areas, they are going to work harder and therefore hurt more. Remember, you have to balance what you're doing at the bottom, by your wrist, with what is happening at the top, by the shoulder, neck, and T-spine. So that's going to be key here.

I will now show you the techniques you can use to clean it up. The easiest way to clean up the trigger points within your forearm is to use the handball. Many people use other types of balls, but I'm all about listening to your body and staying in that discomfort zone instead of giving it pain. I like using the handball because it allows for communication by pushing back, so allowing you to feel what areas need to be worked on. Put the handball close to your elbow, let your forearm relax, and place the arm against the wall. You want to make sure your handball is in between the wall and your elbow. Now you are going to push your body against your forearm and let it relax. Once you do that, everything now starts to open up. You're going to hold it there while you feel your trigger point, and then relax your forearm. Move your forearm backwards a little as you continue to do this. Then you are going to rotate your forearm upwards, and follow the same procedure. Afterwards, you want to rotate your forearm downwards, and apply the same technique. You will feel some sort of discomfort, but it should not be painful. You can still talk and make a note of the points that are irritated. Now you are going to cross your forearms behind your back and place the handball right on the forearm. You can lean against the wall and apply a similar pressure. This is the easiest way to clean up those trigger points on the forearm.

What Is Hypermobility?

Causes
There are several cases of hypermobility, such as misaligned joints and abnormally shaped ends of the bones at a particular joint. However, as in my case, it is when the collagen in the joint is defective and results in weakened ligaments, muscles and tendons. It can even lead to osteoporosis.

It has also been shown that the condition may be genetic and can run in families. Double jointed is used to describe people with the condition, but this is not accurate; there are is no extra joints anywhere just the tension for them to stretch more than they should.

Results
In real terms, this means an individual is prone to strains and sprains because the joints stretch too far and cause these problems and is called 'joint hypermobility syndrome'. So where someone may slip and be fine, someone with hypermobility can slip and end up with a sprain, which can be quite painful. Repetitive movements can also cause problems, such as picking up a bag in a certain way repeatedly which strains the joint and causes pain.

People with hypermobility can also suffer muscle fatigue due to muscles working harder due to the weakness of the joint. It can also be associated with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia as well as the physical symptoms. There are also studies suggesting that hypermobility may be symptomatic of serious conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteogenesis imperfecta and polio.

Hypermobility syndrome
Hypermobility syndrome is a combination of hypermobility with symptoms such as myalgia (muscle pain) and arthralgia (joint pain). It is common in children and more likely to occur in females than males.

As with hypermobility, it can lead to sprains and strains as well as joint pain. It can bring on early-onset osteoarthritis in teen years as well as knee pain and back pain. Joints often make clicking noises when moving and people suffering find they have a poor response to anaesthetic or pain medication. It can often be the condition described as 'growing pains' in children.

Treatment
