The tendons from the flexor muscles in the forearm pass through this tunnel along with the median nerve.

When this condition occurs, waving causes the carpal tunnel to narrow, creating less space in the tunnel for the tendons and median nerve to pass through. If the swapping becomes pronounced, the median nerve becomes compressed. This leads to pain, numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring fingers. If the symptoms are severe or occur over a period of time, weakness in the hand may also occur.

There are many factors that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. The most well known and well debated is repetitive motion, especially as applied to work situations. Working a repetitive motion job where the biomechanics of the job are poorly set up can place a person at an increased risk for carpal tunnel syndrome. An example of this is typing at a keyboard for 8 hours a day at a desk where the keyboard is placed at shoulder height, causing the person to type with his or her wrists bent. Assembly line jobs that do not use ergonomic tools are also at risk for this syndrome.

Prior injury to the wrist also places a person at risk for this condition. A prior fracture or ligament tears at the wrist may have rejected in scar tissue in the carpal tunnel. This will naturally narrow the area and will place a person at increased risk for developing the syndrome.

People with arthritis are also at an increased risk for developing carpal tunnel syndrome. As the swilling of arthritis settles into the carpal tunnel, it thickens the fluids, stiffens the tissues and narrows the tunnel, causing compression on the median nerve.

Catching carpal tunnel syndrome early and managing it conservatively is the most effective way to treat this condition. Keeping the wrists in straight, neutral positions will reduce the pressure on the median nerve when completing daily activities. Wrist support braces will help maintain this position, especially at night when people have a tendency to curl their arms while sleeping. Using ergonomic tools and making changes to work stations to make sure the wrists are in straight, neutral positions will also assist in taking the strain off of the carpal tunnel area. Frequent rest breaks and ice or cold packs will help to keep swelling down.

If this condition becomes advanced, surgery to release the transverse carpal ligament is an option. This procedure has become much less invasive in recent years and recovery takes much less time. The wrist structure is not compromised by this procedure, although hand strength may be slightly reduced. Proper precautions, including following the same conservative management techniques while recovering from surgery, are important for the procedure to be effective. If not, scar tissue may form and the same type of compression on the median nerve may occur.

Clearly early identification and treatment of this condition can limit its effects and allow a person to maintain hand function for many years.

What is Causing Your Carpal Tunnel Symptoms?

Carpal tunnel syndrome and its causes can be quite controversial at times, depending on who you listen to! For many patients the actual cause of their carpal tunnel syndrome is unknown, however, many feel it is due to repetitive hand activities at work or play. Some studies have shown that increased pressure across the wrist or (carpal tunnel) from repetitive and or awkward wrist movements may increase the chances of getting carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in some people. While other studies have shown that medical conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism and obesity just to name a few, puts a person at a greater risk. And even more so if they have one or more of these conditions coupled with repetitive hand or wrist activities.

Really nearly any condition that makes the carpal tunnel area smaller (ie born with a small carpal tunnel, arthritis, wrist fracture etc ..) or if a condition makes the things (ie tendons, tissues) inside the carpal tunnel larger (by inflammation or swelling) … all these things can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome as more pressure is put on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel area of ​​your wrist.

We also know that genetics can play a role in who gets and who does not get carpal tunnel syndrome. From XRAYS and MRI studies we now know that some people are just born with smaller carpal tunnels than others, so they may get CTS quicker or easier than someone else. The shape and dimension of your wrist may put you at risk for getting carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal Tunnel Explanation Made Easy

Some “experts” try to make the carpal tunnel syndrome explanatory complicated (and some cases can be) but most people do not realize that your typical carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) case, simply means that the median nerve that runs through your wrist ( the carpal tunnel) is being compressed or “pinched” in some way. Really, any condition that makes the size of the tunnel smaller, or makes the other things / structures in the tunnel larger can produce Carpal Tunnel Symptoms.

My patients usually describe the symptoms as a gradual numbness and tingling, dull ache or pain to their hands … they say it “FELLS LIKE MY HANDS ARE GOING TO SLEEP!”

So, over time when enough pressure builds up on the median nerve, the blood supply to the outer layer of the nerve can be reduced or stopped all together. IF this goes on long enough it can ever cause that portion of the nerve to die … sometimes causing your symptoms to be permanent! (Thankfully, this can take awhile to occur)

Most patients seem to have more numbness and pain at night or in the morning upon waking up ..so bad it wakes them up and they have to shake or rub their hands. This is where Ice Wraps and pain relieving creams and gels after work or play really helps! (or in my case) after pulling weeds or mowing the grass.

INTERESTINGLY (to me at least) is that the carpal tunnel anatomy of the median nerve only supplies the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger, so, guess where you have CARPAL TUNNEL SYMPMENTS? .. YOU got it! ONLY in those areas!

Also, this is where Wrist Braces during the day and Night splints when sleeping can make a huge difference in your overall carpal tunnel symptoms.

Some patients complain of dropping things, or having symptoms while writing, or gripping a steering wheel. They sometimes also complain of weakness in the thumb, hand and wrist, or pain going up the forearm, or neck and shoulder pain, but watch out for this one … it may not be carpal tunnel syndrome at all! As there are other conditions that cam mimic CTS.

I've never heard of carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of playing guitar . Then CTS knocked me out of all playing for over three years. The best way to avoid ever getting into this problem is providing the right exercise.

Injuries like CTS are cumulative. Once you begin to feel pain while playing your guitar, you need to make changes to prevent further damage. Musicians need to have strength, co-regulation and dexterity in both hands, whether they play a drum, piano, sax or guitar.
